The United States Embassy reacted to the joint statement by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Baku City Prosecutor's Office

"I have read the joint statement by the law and order enforcement bodies and I am very surprised." This is the statement made to Mediaforum website by Dmitri Terakhovsky, responsible for media affairs at the United States Embassy in Azerbaijan regarding the joint statement by Ministry of Internal Affairs and Baku City Prosecutor's Office on the arrest of two youth activists Adnan Hajizada and Emin Milli.

He says that he didn't understand why the statement made by American embassy was regarded as the intrusion in Azerbaijan's internal affairs. "It is interesting to me, why the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Baku City Prosecutor's Office evaluated our statement as the intrusion in Azerbaijan's internal affairs. Our statement was published on our website both in Azerbaijani and English. We ask Azerbaijani government to hold the trial of youth activists according to the principles of international law and human rights and that rights of these citizens are respected. This is about the arrest of intellectual and well educated youth who studied in US. We have worked with these young people. There is nothing in the statement which could be regarded as the intrusion in the internal affairs of Azerbaijan or the investigation process. I don't understand why the law and order enforcement organs reacted in this way."

In a joint statement, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Baku City Prosecutor's Office accused the foreign embassies in interfering in Azerbaijan's internal affairs and has called upon them to stop the statements which are evaluated as interfering in the investigation process.

Several embassies and international organizations have made statements regarding Emin Milli's and Adnan Hajizada's arrest. In the statement made by US embassy on July 11, it is noted that Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizada were subjected to violence, arrested and involved in investigation. "The people who attacked them were released. We are also worried about the police not letting the lawyers in and about Emin and Adnan not receiving the adequate medical care.

These issues were raised in front of Azerbaijani government and law and order enforcement organs. We will continue our work in that regard. We call on Azerbaijani government to provide Adnan Hajizada and Emin Milli with necessary legal and medical aid and respect their own citizens' rights. American government is abiding by its promise of supporting the freedom of speech and assembly and continues its work with Azerbaijani government and people in that regard."
