"We talked to Azerbaijani authorities regarding the arrest of young activists"

EU special representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby talked to Radio Liberty about the arrest of young activists and presidents' meeting. Below is his interview :

- Young activists Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizadeh have been arrested on hooliganism charges recently. They are currently awaiting trial. The arrest is explained by their political views. Azerbaijan is a part of the EU Neighbourhood Policy and Eastern Partnership programs. What is your view of the arrest?

- The event took place last week. We are concerned about this and closely monitor the situation. We've talked to the authorities about this. For now I would like to emphasize that human rights issues are part of bilateral agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan. That also constitutes a commitment within the framework of the Council of Europe and the OSCE agreements. The important thing is that we do react. But I would prefer not to disclose what we do and what plans we have.

- Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia are due to discuss solutions for the Karabakh conflict on 17 July in Moscow. In your opinion, does this meeting have a potential to yield serious results?

- I wouldn't dare to make predictions. Past experience shows that it's hard to do. But I can say that I hope these talks will be an important step towards conflict resolution. EU is committed to support peaceful resolution process. We have quite closely approached the processes in the Caucasus and built tight relationships with countries in the region including Azerbaijan and Armenia.
