One step back again in this tough path toward Democracy

Elvin Yusifli

In my country things do not go the way people in normal democracies see and feel. It is a lot different from those societies and systems as a whole. For example, it is really hard for me even to call Western democracies system, as this term stands for something too complicated, stony .. as in my country. Where cognizance of feelings and respect for human dignity have been going downwards for years. 17 years ago when we achieved our liberty owing to the limitless blood of our countrymen, we were fighting for bright future, for a society where every individual would be respected and have their rights protected. We were fighting for rights of us.We were fighting against colossal empire that collapsed in the face of the bravery of my nation, as well as that of nations that had been part of this big complicated, stony organ for decades.

We passed a long way. Now there is no empire suppressing the rights of my nation or mine. There is no external power dictating its will to the individuals of this country...

Nevertheless, we are still being dictated. We are being regularly shown the way we should follow. We are being told to be as much sheepish and robotic as possible, even more than possible. We are being harrassed when we refuse to conform to the system's rules (system is not democracies, but my country with its complicated, stony, unfair,a
rtificial structure).

Emin and Adnan are those Azerbaijanians who perceived what their fathers fought for. More than that, they discerned their own responsibilities in front of their folks and country. They were not accusing someone as many of us do. They were not disturbing peace just because some forces were provoking them. They were even not fighting their assailants in public, respecting the rule of law and turning to the police of their own to be defended...

And the police - in word "defender of rights and peace", in practice very model of corrupt system put them in jail instead. And with speed of thunder the national court decided they should be jailed for 2 monthes. This is one of rare trials just took a day or so. As was in times of Stalin's "Great Repressions"...

Now not only friends and like-minded youth were hit hard by this decision. Each free soul in this society feels the hugeness of unjustice and the extent of repression against these free minds.

"What does not kill, makes stronger", this national saying is becoming more obvious truth and more understandable phrase of traditional wisdom, regularly. And I call on to my fellow - free minds and free souls, do not give up, what does not kill, will make stronger, as long as you are in the right path.
